Catalyst Studios X VCU “The Gallery”

A night of collaboration, exchange of ideas, and collection of creatives and business oriented alum from Virginia Commonwealth University under the gallery theme “Uncommon”. Where there was also an auction for Senegalese artist and their artwork where all proceeds are sent back to them. Catalyst studios hosted their 5th Gallery Show in partnership with VCU to gather alumni from all years to highlight works and connect to prolong the connection of VCU to it’s post-grad community!

I, Sydney Wilson, showcased four pieces at this gallery. Three being new, and one being from earlier in 2025. This event was a beautiful opportunity to expand on my passions for educational delivery through my artwork with an active and live lookbook for one of my pieces “Harlem Legacy”.

Pancakes & Booze Art Show Orlando

Pancakes and Booze Art show was a really fun time! It was very different, especially since most art expos don’t have pancakes being made live. But there was SO many artist there of different mediums, background, and ideologies it really led to very interesting conversations and even new connections! I was live painting through the Meta glasses on Instagram and while in person, and that was truly a unique experience, but fun!

I showcased three pieces and worked on one live, “Secured Affirmation”, “Harlem Legacy”, and “Roses” which at the time was a brand new piece for me. Can’t wait for the next time they’re in town! The diversity in the crowd is what really caught my attention the whole night!

Catalyst Studios "The Gallery" Legacy Themed

Each art event I am able to be a part of I am immensely grateful for. However, this event was the first time I took my vow I wrote to myself in December 2024 and brought it to life! I promised myself I would take a route of education, empowerment, and intentionality with my storytelling in 2025 when it came to all of my artwork. And by the time it was April 2025, “Harlem Legacy” was completed and ready to share with the world! I was in the process of creating an artist lookbook and historical breakdown for the piece! Which was truly an amazing experience for me to share with people as it allowed me to introduce the idea of substantial conversations.

I also showcased another new piece titled “My Legacy” which is the shattered piece and goes into shattering the shallow concepts we chase after in our lives; power, money, chaos, etc. and using my work to look beyond that surface. And I showcased another piece titled “Hometown Roots (Lemon Pepper Mumbo Sauce)” (it has a reason for the name in parenthesis lol) which was a homage to two cities I was born and raised in that shaped me today D.C. and Atlanta.

Black Health Commission “Anatomy of An Artist” Blk Joy Art Exhibit

Being a part of The BLK Joy Art Show was truly an unforgettable experience! This was my second art showing in Orlando, and nothing short of amazing! I was already seeing familiar faces and getting the opportunity to network with so many new people. The mission behind the BLK Joy Commission was also amazing to be present for! This being their first art exhibition and knowing they are looking to source an outlet for healthcare within the Black community in Orlando with events, info sessions, and more is very refreshing.

I showcased three pieces, “Money Makerz”, “Just-”, and “Reification-Confusion”, all digital illustrations done on my iPad, printed and framed. This lovely three hour event was filled with so much energy and passion behind each artist’s work. Getting to speak on the significance behind my work while learning about other’s art journey is something I am always grateful for!

Black History Month Exhibition

Black History Month Exhibition

The Black History Month art exhibit in the City of Orlando, was a beautiful opportunity and one of my first events in Florida since I had moved down here. The variety in works and artist alike was truly one thing I will never take for granted! It was beautiful being able to be a part of such an immerse story of black labor and the paths we must pioneer for ourselves as creatives and the accountability we should hold our communities to.

I showcased my piece “Modern Revolution”, a digital illustration I created in the beginning of 2024. The piece was a celebratory homage to black cowboys post slavery in the midwest and onward. The levels of prejudice, racism, and overall struggles they had to fight through to pioneer and shift the narrative of cowboys for good was more than a revolutionary act, but a blueprint we can look back on today as we still fight for rights. However, today it’s more deeply rooted, hidden, and may I even say not cared about because of what we are “given”. “Modern Revolution” is a reminder to carry the same attitude as our predecessors as we fight for our rights today for the betterment of our communities.

The Veneer of Perception

Are people inherently good or evil? Is our consciousness merely a thin veneer masking our true selves? Does this fragile layer shape our perceptions of reality, or can it be peeled away to reveal deeper truths? In her upcoming solo exhibition, The Veneer of Perception, Sydney Wilson invites you to confront these questions and challenge the boundaries of what you think you know. This immersive experience draws you into a world of hidden layers and shifting perspectives, with interactive elements and diverse mediums designed to provoke and inspire. :iidr Gallery “Through Thought” Group Exhibition

:iidrr Gallery: Through Thought

Exhibition Dates: October 17 - 27, 2024

Curated by Bebe Uddin

Artists: MAESTRO, Sujetka, Cidney Cher, Sherly Fan, Arielle Weenonia Gray, Emma June Jones , Rui Kez, Jeremiah Morris, Sydney Wilson, Annu Yadav, Bethany Yeap

Text co-written by Murph Phi, Bebe Uddin, & Zhanying

In this first series installment of “Through Thought”, :iidrr gallery is pleased to invite audiences into a thought-provoking collection of works from artists along the east coast that allow us a look into the journey of creating work that reflects the distinct narrative histories that embody the lived experience of the artist, while exposing the choreographic relationship between realization, reason and reaction.

The intention of “Through Thought” is to challenge the viewer’s mind, beliefs or views of a particular subject, thought or the idea presented in the submitted work. The target submission is not completely fixed on imagination or just the idea or psychology of thought, and can also be communicated or informed by thought provoking behaviors. This is a way to help the person experiencing the work to understand conception from more of a minimal perspective if they were to land in a moment of photography. In the first installment of the series, we tasked each artist to contend with the concept of “Figurative.”

Each artist featured in “Through Thought” suggests a subversion of our normative definition of figurative to extend into the realm of varied art mediums. The exhibit intends to explore the abstract, conceptual, literal, and learned dimensions of critical figurative thinking and its interpretive materialization via the personalized narratives of the artist’s lived experiences. Each artist has mobilized a mode of the imaginative from the real, surreal, and hyper-real to reflect narratives distinct to each own’s historical framework of perceiving themselves and the world around them. The artist has achieved a semblance of the figurative. Through a varied series of configuration, disfiguration, reconfiguration, and transfiguration, a narrative has been solidified utilizing themes that touch on the social, economic, and political climate we find ourselves presently divided within.
Steeped in the vibrant essence of city life and her African American heritage, Sydney Wilson’s sunset-hued, graffiti-styled paintings are bold, bombastic confrontations of everyday stagnicity that tempt the viewers, fueled by raw, untamed mythological energy, to embark on a wild expedition into the acidity of cultural landscapes. Hybridizing urban Black cultural realities with supernatural fantasies, grotesque mysticism and divine power, her portraits tear open the liminal realm where heart, veins, and souls pulsate in a single beat under the arrest of trauma-informed extrication, a moment when the inner saints and demons are both battled and embraced.

“Root Work”, 2024

Acrylic and Oil on Wood, Gesso, Rope, Canvas, Artificial Flower Petals

Dimension: 18.5 in x 45 in

Root Work” is centered on the deep state reflection we must encounter to experience  growth and separate from ourselves. We are faced with having to tend to our inner weeds and either; nurture, grow, or remove certain parts of ourselves mentally, physically, spiritually or figuratively. “Root Work” serves as a symbol of decision for ourselves. To look deeper than the surface level to unveil the complexity and toxicity within a deep root trauma/suffering we have in ourselves. The falling figure represents acceptance in being in a non controllable state, allowing things around and on us to be as is. Free yourself on the constrictions placed upon you and find what tools you need for your next stage of blooming.
